Renault donates New Megane to Pieta House

Renault Ireland recently handed over the key card to a brand new 171 Renault Megane Grand Coupe to Pieta House, writes Trish Whelan.

Pieta House was founded in 2006 and now has services and centres right across Ireland. It offers free counselling to those suffering from suicidal ideation, those who have been bereaved by suicide, and people who are engaging in self-harm. Staff are fully qualified and provide a professional one-to-one therapeutic service.

Pieta House CEO Brian Higgins will make use of the Megane as he travels all over Ireland to visit the Pieta House centres, the latest of which is to open in Letterkenny in Co Donegal, by mid-May. The car is branded with the charitys logo and it will act as a vehicle to raise awareness of Pieta House.

Renault Irelands Country Operations Manager Patrick Magee, said the company is delighted to be in a position to lend its support to such a worthy charity as Pieta House and hopes the new Megane Grand Coupe will benefit the amazing work that they do.

Pieta House has helped more than 28,000 people since its doors first opened 11 years ago.

New small crossover from Citroen

Citroen will be adding a small SUV to its range in the autumn, writes Brian Byrne.

The C3 Aircross will have the option of Grip Control for difficult terrain, and a Hill Descent facility for the same.

The design cues are inspired by the C-Aircross shown at the Geneva Motor Show last March.

Citroen say it will be the most spacious crossover in its segment and will offer a boot volume with all seats in use of 410L.

A full range of driver assistance systems will be available, including active safety braking, auto high-beam lights control, and speed sign recognition.

The car will be available in a wide range of colours, inc luding contrasting ones for the roof, as well as colour packs. There are five available interior designs.

Petrol engines of 80/110/130hp will be offered, as well as 100/120hp diesels. Manual and automatic transmissions will be available.

Used Car Review BMW 3 Series 2005 2012

It has been a year since the new generation was released, Myk Belmonte dishes out the strengths of the previous model had.

2005-2012 BMW 3 Series

History
There is a link between mass market and luxury. Hence, a car from a luxury brand sells well and even sells more units than some mainstream branded vehicles. It is a feat for the brand, especially if you are not based from Maranello.

With over a hundred thousand units sold worldwide, the E90 3 Series can be considered as the best selling Bimmer during 2005 to 2011. Why does it sell well? A broad range of variants, numerous engine choices, and the image of being the ultimate drivers machine. It was the fifth model from the 3 Series range, but for the Philippine market, I suggest you to read the paragraph below.

It was three times the charm for this model in the Philippines, whose idea of luxury is in the form of a three-pointed star. The third model (fifth in the world) is one of the brands best selling model, with most Bimmer buyers approaching dealerships would mostly end up driving home in it. Until 2012, you can buy this generation brand new, with the F90 being launched in May that year.

Value and Costs
Disclaimer: only sedan versions are included in the price range I would be mentioning. To make the sentence straight to the point, 3 Series sedans (excluding the M model, which commands a very high resale price) can cost you P1,600,000-P2,700,000. Do remember that earlier models and 4-cylinder examples are priced in the lower scale while newer units cost, obviously, higher. As what the doctor ordered, picking up a pre-owned unit is the thing to do.

Maintenance costs are at par with European marques but more expensive than their Nippon counterparts. To avoid potential headaches, make sure to have a keen eye towards the engine like topping up with the necessary oils and lubricants. Standard gadgets must be checked thoroughly since it is fun to have them, until they break down.

Exterior and Interior
Norbert Reithofer and Burkhard Goeschel are the persons who took time to design this vehicle, so no more Bangle and van Hooydonk criticisms of flame surfacing here. Squint longer and youll see some traces of the E46 3 Series here, flowing lines are standard and the lineage continues on.

Comparing this to the predecessor, there is more space (although not that much) at the back but the controls remain driver oriented, with the center console being angled towards the driver. Large gauges are the standard here, and a tradition of the 3 Series. Controls are intuitive and thankfully, the dreaded iDrive is not standard among PHDM E90s.

Engine
If you have noticed among the Ultimate Used Car Guide reviews of BMWs, it is the long list of the available engines and thus, contributing to the lengthy paragraph f or the engine section. Enough of this, lets go to serious business; with the first engine made an option is the N43B20 1,995cc that has 141hp at 6,000rpm and 190Nm at 4,250rpm. Carrying the same displacement but having a different engine name and figures is the N46B20 with 170hp at 6,700rpm and 210Nm at 4,250rpm. An inline six gasoline was once available in the form of the N54B30 2,979cc that possess 218hp at 6,100rpm and 270Nm at 2,400-4,200rpm. 2007 saw the launch of an oil burner and it is a N47D20 1,995cc with 177hp at 4,000rpm and 350Nm at 1,750-3,000rpm. Let us give each engine a brief but direct description, with the base N43B20 having the same figures of an FD Civic 1.8 and while speed is decent, body weight is what prevents to push through. The N46B20 has adequate acceleration but the inline six models have great pull. If there is one all-around model, it would be the 320d models that have the diesel under the hood. They perform well since a wide range of revs can be had.
Driving Impressions
They said that sports cars can seat two people, but the 3 Series allows you to take four persons for the unadulterated fun. Balance is the key, with the suspension and engine combo doing a great task of accelerating this vehicle. To end this paragraph, when it comes to driving dynamics, the 3 Series is hard to beat and definitely undisputed.

Verdict
Owning the 3 Series is a wonderful experience, since you get sports car driving feel with the practicality of a four door sedan. And with the availability of pre-owned units, the case of buying one is stronger.

Vehicle Overview
Apparently, this vehicle was an intended replacement to the Daewoo Lanos whose development was done prior to GMs takeover of the bankrupt Korean car maker and was the first to be released after the acquisition of the American car maker. The aim of this vehicle is simple: sell this vehicle at an affordable price but with generous amount of equipment. For the Philippine market, the sedan configuration arrived three years later after the hatchbacks release. Unlike the latter, this one was sold until 2013, where it got replaced by the Sonic.

Going inside the cabin will reveal two things: a not-so-spacious interior (although comfortable to be in) and a dashboard filled with hard plastic. Four passengers would fit fine though squeezing isnt that good plus trunk space isnt that big also.

Driving this car wouldnt inspire anything, it does the job decently without any drama. Occupants would be treated to a high seating position and an expansive outside visibility. Unlike the hatchback which gets a weak engine, the sedan utilizes a somewhat smaller but more powerful engine which is adequate for ones needs. One thing to keep note for manual models is the location of the reverse gear, which is beside the first gear.

What Should I Get
A sole variant sporting a 94hp 1.4 engine was first sold from October 2006 until the line-up was expanded in 2010. The single model has all power amenities, alloy wheels, dual airbags, ABS brakes, fog lamp, 60/40 fold rear seats, CD player with MP3 capability, alarm, and keyless entry. That variant became the LS (has a manual transmission) or the LT (only with an automatic) in 2010. Other variants that came out include the L which does have steel wheels with cover, no airbags, no ABS brakes, power windows, power door locks, and no security features and the LT Sport which adds body kits and a rear spoiler available in either 1.4 or a 103hp 1.6 engine. Among the variants, no need to look beyond the 1.4 LS or LT since the LT Sport models arent that common plus you get most kit with what we recommend.

History
It was in the 90s that the money was on Sports Utility Vehicles due to their high profit margins. This meant every car maker have to sell an SUV (developed on their own or use-their-own-name-but-others-body) so they can see their sales soar high. 4x4 specialist Land Rover was not contented with their luxurious Range Rover and their utilitarian Defender and with that in mind, the Discovery was developed and sold to the mass market with its lower price.

Code-named as "Project Jay" under development stages, this sport ute was made available in 1989 in the United Kingdom. This SUV was priced lower than the Range Rover but had the chassis and  ;drive train of the upscale brethren. At first, three doors are the only option with a five door configuration followed. Various engine choices include a 2.0 liter four cylinder (the only Discovery generation to have this), a diesel power plant, and three V8 motivators. In fact, this was utilized as the ride of Prince Philip during his Park Ranger stint in the Windsor Great Park.

A Filipino Rovernut had to wait until 1996 for the official launch of the Discovery. It was brought in to the country by Asian Carmakers Corporation (who used to distribute and assemble Kia, BMW, Subaru, Daihatsu, and Mazda passenger vehicles back then) with a stratospheric price of P4.4M. Fully loaded automatic units are very common, while Discoveries with stick shifts are rare.

Value and Costs
You may rejoice that the British experience can be obtained for less a million bucks. A locally purchased unit could set you between P650,000-P750,000, which is a bargain. However, spotting this SUV in the weekly classified ads is uncommon. If you find a unit, make sure it seen road usage than being driven in rough terrain. There are units that are from Japan which should be avoided without any second thought, since owning a problematic luxury vehicle can spoil the experience.

The common stereotype which involves European vehicles that are hard to maintain. But Beeboy Bargas of Top Gear Philippines said in an article of his that "the cost to maintain a Discovery is not prohibitive". Land Rover specialist shops had been sprouting like mushrooms and parts sourcing are not difficult. Exterior and Interior

Engine
Asian Carmakers was right when they brought in a diesel mover for this Rover. Among all engines available, it was a 2,495cc with 112hp at 4,250rpm and 265Nm at 1,800rpm. Economy and performance wise, this can rival current model SUVs due to the light weight to chug around and the abundance of low end torque. It nay not be the fastest, but for those cra ving for more, there is the V8 petrol trim, but you have to learn to live with the consumption it offers.

Driving Impressions
True 4x4 vehicles wont fear any road - paved, unpaved, or beaten. At any surface (drivable of course) and speed, it provides unparalleled grip. There is no need to fear for bounces and rollovers due to the comfort biased coil springs (on rigid-axle suspension). The transfer-case stick is a good companion for any good or bad road conditions. But, the accelerator is long reach (and it necessitates the use of thick soled shoes for your, well, feet) and the clutch for stick shift variants is hard to operate especially if you graduated from a sedan.

Verdict
Who said that if its a off-road machine, it must have a bouncy ride. The Land Rover Discovery debunks this notion by offering a comfort tuned suspension and retaining the Land Rover heritage. With lower prices, it is a steal if you are seeking an all around com panion - rain or shine - in a luxurious package. Review Audi Q2

With its success in compact, medium and large SUVs well established, it was only a matter of time before Audi moved down the scale and filled out its crossover list with the Q2, writes Brian Byrne.

While technically a small crossover/SUV, its actually a quite roomy car, and surprises when you pick it up in the metal. So theres a case for it in a real family situation, rather than for the couple with a brace of small children only.

It has rather more stylistic presence than its larger siblings, and thats not just because my review car was a bright yellow machine that simply couldnt be missed in the car park.


The front end is strong and square-jawed, and in profile theres more sculpting and chara cter line work than on the larger SUVs from the VW premium subsidiary. The rear flanks and the black wide C-pillar work very well to give the car a very distinctive look. It sits nicely high too, and for a tall lank like me it was easy to get in and out of. Something I nowadays appreciate much more, as sleeker styling necessitates more ducking (and banging) the head.

Inside is also familiar to any of us who have regularly driven Audis, and that means bright and clear-graphics primary instruments, along with the typical upright screen from the top centre of the dashboard. The overall styling details of the interior are clean and theres the high quality trim were used to from the brand.

Good seats, an interior more roomy tha n might have been expected, and an overall refined character to the machine quickly reinforced what had been a good feeling about the Q2 from the beginning.

The review car was pretty well loaded with technology, including active cruise control, overtaking vehicle warning, and a number of other bits and pieces which are now becoming regulars in most brands and many of their models and if I continue to list them all, thered be no space to write anything else.

One element in the car that I particularly liked, though, was the sat-nav system that uses Google Maps for its display. Better than the usual graphic maps, that we could see actual buildings, fields, and other landmarks from overhead, gave a much better sense of place as I drove. It is also much more helpful when trying to find ones way around places like business estates.

That system also duplicates itself in the virtual cockpit system between the main instruments, or in a different format for those instruments. Its one of the ideas which Audi has been pushing ahead of the field, and one of the technologies which I really welcome.

Theres a wide range of engines available with the Q2, from 1.0 turbocharged petrol with 115hp to a 190hp 2.0 diesel. Each offer the option of a 6-speed manual or 7-speed auto. The upper level engines can also be had with quattro 4WD, otherwise the cars are FWD.

The engine in my review car was the 150hp turbocharged 1.4 petrol with the autobox. That powertrain made it a very snappy drive indeed, along with the smoothness of the automatic which also meant I could amble along if that was my humour.

The ride and handling were very tidy, and that was no surprise, because thats a feature of all Audis in recent years.

What was a little surprising was the sense of fun in being behind the wheel of this one. Not because it was a particularly fun car in itself, but because I knew that from outside people were seeing a much crisper-looking Audi than weve been getting. Styles cycle, and the brand is now swinging in the direction of strong shapes rather than sleekness.

This particular car wasnt cheap, because it came with a lot of stuff. The base Q2 is just under €31,000, and this auto version starts at €35,980. With its S-Line grade and all the extras, it stood outside my house at €45,448. Thats expensive for a car in this segment. But Id be right happy with the basic SE and this powertrain, at €35,980.
